Wrong-Way Drivers & You - Law Office of D. Hardison Wood

There?s been an uptick in incidents related to wrong-way drivers lately, including a recent accident involving children. A wrong-way driver on Capital Boulevard in Raleigh struck a van full of children, according to the article on WRAL.com. Thankfully, no one was injured. For interesting discussion on what can be done to prevent these types of accidents, take a look at the comment thread at the bottom of the article.

These types of accidents are more common than they once were, so it?s especially important to be aware and vigilant on the road. Make sure you pay attention to all posted road signs and traffic signals. Better education is the best way to prevent these incidents! If you do find yourself in a wreck situation, remember that D. Hardison Wood is very experienced in the legal area of car accidents.

Could A New Coupon App Bring Facebook One Step Closer To Retail Commerce?

redplum social savings valassisThere have been some signals coming from Facebook that point to how it could one day become a platform for e-commerce beyond apps and virtual goods on Facebook itself. There are its patent holdings, and there is the code for a (not live) "Want" button to use on posts for particular products that could trigger a purchase. Today comes one more opening on this front, but from a third party rather than Facebook itself: couponing giant Valassis, which already works with some 15,000 advertisers to create electronic coupons, has launched a new Facebook app that lets brands offer coupons that can be printed or downloaded directly within Facebook itself, without taking users off the site -- a first for Facebook, according to Valassis' chief digital officer Jim Parkinson.

Transgender Pride Parade marshal Jenna Talackova on sex, life and reality TV

Jenna Talackova peers wide-eyed into an elevator mirror.

?I should have worn my other contacts,? says the transgender Vancouver beauty queen, sighing.

Heading up to the rooftop patio of a West End apartment building Saturday to talk to The Sun about her tough upbringing, ?wild child? teen years and current role as Pride Parade grand marshal, she has appearance on her mind.

Talackova, 23, has just returned from a whirlwind trip to Toronto, where she filmed the pilot for her coming reality television show.

?The Jenna Talackova Project,? she says, looking out across a 14th-floor vista encompassing English Bay and downtown Vancouver. ?It?ll just be me doing day-to-day stuff, judging a pageant, going to Mexico, you know.?

Aside from a new agent and a manager, Talackova?s learning the celebrity trade from an acting coach. Soon she?ll be flying to New York City to promote high-end shoes, like the nude pumps on her feet, in a Stuart Weitzman commercial directed, her publicist says, by James Franco.

Her new jet-setting lifestyle almost makes her role as grand marshal at the Aug. 5 Vancouver Pride Parade seem tame.

Before that gig is her appearance alongside Mayor Gregor Robertson Saturday evening at the Honda Celebration of Light fireworks display.

?Just don?t touch him,? says publicist Rory Richards.

?He?s cute but ....?

?Ew, are you talking about our mayor?? Talackova says, smiling.

Less than a year ago, the would-be model-actress was in a very different headspace.

?I was seeing psychics ... because I was kind of depressed with my life,? she said.

Since then, she?s been booted out of and subsequently reinstated in the Miss Universe Canada pageant, changing the rules in the process and making headlines around the world to become an icon for the transgender community.

?I feel so blessed, I can?t even believe what?s happening in my life right now,? she says.

Talackova had been disqualified in March for not being a ?naturally born female.?

But the leggy blond, who had sex-reassignment surgery at 19, refused to back down. She sought legal counsel and argued the controversial decision constituted discrimination.

In a surprise reversal, the Miss Universe Organization, owned by Donald Trump, not only re-entered her; it allowed all transgender women to compete in its worldwide competition, modelling its rules after the Olympic system.

The response wasn?t all positive, however. Talackova recalls some blowback from feminist groups opposed to the beauty pageant concept, which they say reinforces outmoded gender roles and objectification of women.

?Some of us like Miss Universe pageants, some of us don?t,? Talackova says. ?Those people that don?t want to don?t have to compete.

?It?s all fake, anyway, the hair extensions and that, but it?s fun. You only live once, why not have fun with it??

It?s been a long journey for Talackova, born with the given name Walter and raised on the southeastern edge of Vancouver.

The baby of the family, Talackova grew up in a single-parent household with three half-brothers.

?We were a whole tribe,? she says. ?I lived with my mom, mama?s girl, clearly.?

Talackova says she was an engaged, athletic child, but rejected ?boys?? activities and played feminine make-believe, Sailor Moon wand in hand, at every chance.

?I did dance, I did drama. As you can see, I?m kind of a drama queen.?

She bounced around high schools, attending Windermere, Killarney and South Hill before graduating a year behind her class.

?I was kind of a wild child in high school. I went out a lot, I was kind of a social butterfly, and I was always getting into trouble.

?My math teacher ? because I hated math ? would hold my purse when I?d go to the bathroom just to make sure I?d come back,? she says.

Looking back, Talackova says the incongruity between her appearance and what she calls her ?essence? contributed to her restless behaviour.

?My physical body wasn?t matching what was going on inside this whole little world .... In my head I have always been a female,? she says. ?I knew from a very young age.?

Talackova began taking estrogen pills at 14 to counteract her body?s development.

?My mom didn?t understand. So I stayed with my dad for a month just to prove that this was how it was going to be.?

She says the experience eventually gave her family a more open-minded outlook, but believes more support for next-of-kin would ease the transition process, which is otherwise covered financially under the health care system.

The operation itself Talackova had at 19, travelling to Montreal to go under the knife of a renowned sex-reassignment surgeon.

?It feels like such a numb, horrific feeling,? Talackova says, recalling the after-effects. ?It?s extremely painful and sore and you can?t walk. You faint a lot.?

She says enduring the ordeal, which involved staying at a housing centre with other people undergoing sex reassignment, bonded her with new friends and strengthened her identity.

Talackova, a status native whose mother hails from the Lake Babine Nation near Burns Lake, says she draws on her aboriginal heritage for her sense of self.

?I always pray to the Creator every night for the last seven years, even if it?s a quick one. I give my gratitude and try to stay grounded,? she says. ?And that has a lot to do with the native traditions.?

Now a role model herself, Talackova looked to Harisu, a transgender South Korean pop superstar, when she was growing up.

?I was always so inspired by her. And now that I?ve been given this platform, it?s my obligation to get that awareness out there,? she says.

In order to transmit awareness of transgender issues, Talackova continues to take advantage of social media, using it to promote LGBT causes and encourage those struggling with their identities or sexual transitions.

?My Twitter account, my Facebook, my fan page,? she says. ?You live this life once, I always tell them, and if you?re not living it happy you?re not serving yourself and you?re not serving your family or the people around you by being miserable.?

Talackova also looks to her boyfriend, whom she conscientiously keeps out of the limelight, for support.

?He?s always believed in me. He loves me for me, my essence, not my history,? she says. ?And he?s a comfortable heterosexual male.?

As for the week ahead in Vancouver and her grand marshal role: ?It is liberating. It?s amazing,? she says.

?I never said I wanted to be an advocate, it just went on my lap. And I will share my story for the kids, not for anything else, just for the kids, because I wish I had that.?

But for now: ?I need to go home, finish my Brazilian butt workout, because I only did half of it, and I need to take a nap, get ready to go to the fireworks and write my speech.?

Rose Bowl shouldn't serve as a temporary NFL home, study says

Rose bowl

Temporarily hosting an NFL team at the Rose Bowl could bring in millions of dollars but would distract officials from putting into place a long-term plan to boost revenues from the stadium and adjacent golf course, according to a new report.

The Urban Land Institute, a research group specializing in responsible land use, conducted a study of the Central Arroyo Seco complex and delivered its report to the Pasadena City Council in June. Last week, the council forwarded the report to its Economic Development and Technology Committee for review.

The institute made suggestions ranging from creating a new conservancy to oversee the Rose Bowl and Brookside Golf Club operations to launching a visitors' program that would include Rose Bowl tours.

As for hosting an NFL team?

?The panel recommends that the city not be swayed by the offer to temporarily host the National Football League,? the report states. ?Such an effort would be detrimental to the ultimate goal of making the Central Arroyo Seco a sustainable part of the Pasadena community.?

City officials have been exploring the possibility of temporarily hosting a football team at the Rose Bowl while a permanent new NFL stadium is built in downtown Los Angeles or the city of Industry. Next month, Pasadena is expected to complete a study of the traffic, noise and economic impacts of hosting a team for up to three years.

Rose Bowl Operating Co. officials have said the earliest a team would play in Pasadena is the fall of 2013.

Meanwhile, the 90-year-old stadium is undergoing a $177-million renovation project, which faces a funding gap of $37.6 million.

Institute representatives interviewed 30 stakeholders, including city officials, representatives of neighborhood associations and business groups.

White House gives cool welcome to bill limiting ammo sales

Sen. Frank Lautenberg, D-N.J., center, leads a news conference on Capitol Hill in Washington, last week to criticize??The White House gave a cool welcome on Monday to Democratic legislation that would effectively ban online or mail-order purchases of ammunition in the aftermath of the mass shooting at an Aurora, Colorado, movie theater.

"I haven't seen the specific piece of legislation that has been offered up today," spokesman Josh Earnest told reporters at the daily press briefing. "But as that and other pieces of legislation make their way through the legislative process, we'll evaluate them."

The proposal, crafted by Democratic Senator Frank Lautenberg and Democratic Representative Carolyn McCarthy, aims to restrict the ability of Americans to buy unlimited quantities of ammunition over the Internet, or by mail order, anonymously.

President Barack Obama has called for a common sense response to the slaughter in Aurora. But the White House has played down his appetite for new legislation as opposed to tightening or toughening existing measures?such as background checks?to keep firearms out of the hands of criminals or the mentally ill. And the president has underlined his support for the Second Amendment to the Constitution.

"He believes in the second amendment of the constitution, in the right to bear arms," Earnest said again Monday.? "But he also believes that we should take robust steps, within existing law, to ensure that guns don't fall in the hands of criminals or others who shouldn't have them.

The new legislation, dubbed the Stop Online Ammunition Sales Act,? rests on four pillars, according to Lautenberg's office:

It requires anyone selling ammunition to be a licensed dealer.

It requires ammunition buyers who are not licensed dealers to present photo identification at the time of purchase, effectively banning the online or mail order purchase of ammo by regular civilians.

It requires licensed ammunition dealers to maintain records of the sale of ammunition.

It requires licensed ammunition dealers to report the sale of more than 1,000 rounds of ammunition to an unlicensed person within any five consecutive business days.

What Jesse Jackson Jr.?s move to Mayo Clinic could mean

CHICAGO (AP) ? The announcement that Jesse Jackson Jr. had been transferred to the Mayo Clinic in Minnesota pinned down his whereabouts for the first time in weeks and gave clear confirmation that the Illinois congressman is suffering from depression.

It also was the first mention that he's now being treated for a "gastrointestinal issue," which some experts said Saturday was a sign his condition is becoming more complicated.

The Chicago Democrat and son of civil rights leader Jesse Jackson has been on a secretive leave of absence for nearly seven weeks, during which his office has released only occasional snippets of information, including that he was undergoing treatment for a "mood disorder" at an undisclosed inpatient facility.

A new, three-sentence written statement from the congressman was distributed by the Mayo Clinic late Friday during the national broadcast of the Olympics' opening ceremony, when public attention was more likely fixed half a world away.

As in the past, the statement gave scant detail, an apparent ongoing strategy in the face of pressure from congressional colleagues and constituents clamoring for an in-depth explanation.

It said he had been transferred to the Mayo Clinic for "extensive inpatient evaluation for depression and gastrointestinal issues," but gave no information on the nature of his depression, where Jackson was being treated prior to arriving at the Mayo Clinic or his progress.

The clinic said Saturday it could not release anything further.

Mention of a gastrointestinal problem raised new questions ? whether it's linked to the depression, entirely unrelated or a complication from a 2004 procedure he underwent to help him lose weight.

"Certainly some people do, as part of their depression or anxiety disorder, manifest it with gastrointestinal symptoms, such as nausea, vomiting, diarrhea," said Matthew Lilly, a psychiatrist in Rochester, Minn., who did a yearlong fellowship at Mayo in 2010 before going into private practice.

"But for them to even comment on that would, to me, sound as if it's a significant issue and not just a mild symptom associated with his illness," he said.

The Mayo Clinic has a highly rated gastrointestinal department as well as a free-standing inpatient psychiatric unit, said John Anderson of the Associates in Psychiatry and Psychology in southeastern Minnesota.

He said people receiving psychiatric care are often transferred to the clinic when a physical illness develops since both can be treated there.

"Mayo does an excellent job in terms of combining those, so they can treat what's essentially a dual diagnosis," Anderson said.

Phone messages left Saturday for Jackson's spokesman weren't immediately returned.

There was no word Saturday on how long Jackson might remain at the Mayo Clinic.

Typically, Mayo will keep someone as a psychiatric inpatient anywhere from several days to several weeks, Lilly said, though he added the use of the phrase "extensive inpatient evaluation" suggested to him it could be longer for Jackson.

"That would be pretty unusual for someone to stay as an inpatient more than a couple of weeks unless there were some pretty complicated issues going on," Lilly said.

The Mayo Clinic has treated other high-profile figures, including Saudi King Abdullah, and has a reputation for top-level security and strict patient privacy, which is evidently important to the congressman and those around him.

Clinic spokesman Ginger Plumbo said it released the brief statement only because Jackson's staff requested it.

"We would never just release information about any patient without their request or consent," Plumbo said.

The timing of Jackson's medical leave has raised questions, in part because Jackson is facing an ethics investigation in the U.S. House connected to imprisoned former Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich.

The congressman went on leave June 10, but his office didn't disclose it until weeks later. Initially, his office said Jackson was being treated for exhaustion. Since then, the office has said his condition was more serious and required inpatient medical treatment.

Earlier this month, a statement from an unidentified doctor said Jackson was receiving intensive medical treatment at a residential treatment facility for "a mood disorder."

The House Ethics Committee is investigating allegations that Jackson was involved in discussions about raising money for Blagojevich's campaign in exchange for the then-governor appointing him to President Barack Obama's vacated U.S. Senate seat.

Jackson was not charged and has repeatedly denied wrongdoing.

86% Beasts of the Southern Wild

I was shocked at how bad "Beasts of the Southern Wild" was. Based on the trailer, which was glorious, I thought this would be my no.1 film of 2012. Not so. First-time filmmaker Benh Zeitlin certainly is talented, and he is a true artist. But here's the problem: he had ideas in his head for three or four different films. Instead of separating out the ideas and writing four different screenplays, he jumbled all the projects together into one profoundly confused gumbo. Each time I thought I was grasping a meaningful work of art in "Beasts," another work of art would erupt, going in a completely different direction and leaving the previous one half-baked. The collision of a half-dozen allegorical tracks made the film for me a muddled mess. I hope someone sits Zeitlin down and teaches him to edit himself. If he learns this, he might turn into a major new filmmaker. The storyline focuses on a girl around 6 years old in the New Orleans area who's being raised in a wilderness area by her father. The girl's mother abandoned the family. She's wrestling with feelings of abandonment and trying to survive in an environment of chaos. Her father disappears occasionally and seems to be having serious health problems. There are fearsome ecological problems as well. Tropical storms periodically flood her low-lying area (which is referred to as The Bathtub) so completely, that she, her father, and their neighbors have to spend considerable amounts of time floating on rafts waiting for the waters to recede. Their whole world is drowned periodically. But they remain fiercely devoted to The Bathtub area and refuse to join civilization. Given their vulnerability to floods, global warming provides an added dimension of anxiety. To make sure we get this, Zeitlin occasionally cuts to footage of actual glaciers breaking apart. Initially I thought "Beasts" was going to be a unique meditation on global warming. A children's song for a world about to drown, if you will, with heart-wrenching references to Hurricane Katrina giving it added specificity and punch. If it had been this, I think "Beasts" might have been an elegiac masterpiece. The problem is that so many other things kept getting in the way. To list just some examples: From out of nowhere, the denizens of the Bathtub are suddenly rounded up and taken to a government-run facility. That thread is suddenly dropped when the girl and several other children (inexplicably) escape the facility. The children then mysteriously are transplanted to an off-shore oil rig that also functions as a brothel, where the girl has a surreal interaction with a figure who appears to represent her mother. That thread is also suddenly dropped, and we're back at the Bathtub where the girl is facing down giant beasts that look like warthogs -- beasts that have nothing to do with the rest of the story. They seem to wander in from another film. When the warthogs appeared, I mentally checked out. I was so exhausted trying to keep track of the narrative threads, when it hit me: this isn't one film, it's an assemblage of fragments from a director working on four different films at the same time. When the filmmaker figures out which film he wants to show me, I'll be back to watch it. Until then, I'm outta here.

Every Day They're Scuffling: Congress Set for Battle in Next Spending Showdown

With Congress planning to leave the nation's capital for a five-week summer recess next week, lawmakers are in the midst of yet another partisan scuffle as each party digs further into its political trenches in the country's spending crisis.

At question is a slate of expiring provisions in the federal tax code, in addition to $1.2 trillion in automatic spending cuts set to take effect on January 1, 2012.

Time is not a luxury. Although five months remain on the calendar until the Fiscal Cliff drops, lawmakers are not scheduled to meet for most of August or October, convening for just 17 more days of legislative business before Election Day on November 6.

To date, only the House has passed an alternative to the sequester cuts, and only the Senate has passed a tax proposal, although House Republicans are primed to extend all of the current tax rates next week, including tax cuts for the wealthiest taxpayers, for another year.

But in a bicameral body, it takes two chambers to tango and so far neither party has found an eager dance partner.

Today, House Speaker John Boehner, who told reporters that he has not personally spoken with President Obama any time lately, said the president is "nowhere to be found on the issue" and implored him to "drop your plan to increase their taxes on January the 1 st."

"Only Republicans have offered plans to address these threats, yet it was the president who came up with the sequester because he didn't want the debt limit to get in the way of his campaign," Boehner, R-Ohio, said. "The president may be checked out to the point that he hasn't been able to meet with his jobs council, but the American people are continuing to ask the question, 'Where are the jobs?' and they expect us to work on this no matter where we are in the campaign or what time of the year it is."

Get more pure politics at ABC News.com/Politics and a lighter take on the news at OTUSNews.com

Wednesday, the Senate voted 51-47 to approve a plan to extend the current tax rates for taxpayers earning less than $250,000 per year.

While Boehner held his news conference this morning, the Senate Democratic leadership simultaneously called on the speaker to take up the Senate's tax bill.

"The American people should understand that we're one vote away from passing this legislation," Reid, D-Nev., said. "Speaker Boehner should have this same vote in the House of Representatives."

Boehner maintains that if House Democrats want to vote on the Senate-passed bill, he intends to allow such a vote.

"If our Democrat colleagues want to offer the president's plan or the Senate Democrat plan, we're more than happy to give them a vote," the speaker promised. "We'll see what [alternative] they'll offer in the Rules committee, but it's our belief that they ought to be able to have the vote."

Although the Democratic proposal is unlikely to pass in the GOP-controlled House, once each chamber demonstrates what type of resolution it is able to produce on its own, a bipartisan, bicameral discussion will likely ensue in order to strike a compromise and avoid 'Taxmageddon' looming at the end of the year.

Senate Democrats also questioned why House Republicans are planning to have a vote on full extension since a plan like that failed to pass in the Senate.

"What the Republicans end up doing is defining a small group of very wealthy people who help fund their party who are vehement in the view that they shouldn't pay any taxes at all," Sen. Charles Schumer, D-NY., said. "The speaker now finds himself in a box. The Senate has spoken, its message is clear, put the middle class first, pass the Senate bill first."

After sending a letter to Boehner and the chairs of each committee calling for the start of bipartisan negotiations before Congress goes on recess next week, Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi said today that "the urgency is intensified."

"We cannot risk just even having a conversation that would suggest that we're not going to do the responsible budgetary things," Pelosi, D-Calif., said. "It's a bitter pill to swallow for everyone. We don't want the defense cuts, and we don't want the domestic cuts. We've already done over a trillion dollars in domestic cuts and plenty defense cuts as well. All we need to have is revenue and balance on the table so that we can find more cuts but we can have the revenue piece of it."

The Senate also approved a House-passed measure to direct the Office of Management and Budget to report within 30 days to Congress on its plans to implement the sequester.

Asked whether he will begin bipartisan negotiations to replace the sequester before the House recesses next week, Boehner said "it's the fair thing to do for the American people and I think clearly Congress has a right to know," how OMB plans to implement the $1.2 trillion in cuts mandated by the Budget Control Act.

Michael Steel, press secretary to the speaker, later clarified that answer by maintaining that "the next step is for the Democrat-controlled U.S. Senate to pass a plan," before lawmakers are assigned to go to conference to resolve their differences.

"At this point, given that the House has passed a bill, there is absolutely nothing to be gained by negotiating with House Democrats," Steel said. "We do, of course, hope they will share their concerns with [Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid], who said he will not 'back off' the sequester, despite the threat it poses to America's national security."

My Feminine Mind: Things Your Doctor May Not Have Told You ...

A problem exists with the way medicine is currently practiced. One issue is that things really aren't set up so doctors can get to know their patients well, thoroughly answer all questions and concerns, and also adequately inform their patients of all options and the ramifications of each one. A 15 minute office visit just doesn't lend itself to this. This is true in the area of birth control just as anywhere else. Overworked doctors, little rapport, a multi-billion dollar contraceptive industry, and incomplete education for OB/GYNs can make it difficult for patients to really know what happens to their bodies with any given birth control method. I passionately believe that women deserve to know how their bodies naturally work and how each form of contraception interferes with their natural functioning. How can they give informed consent without it?

The Pill

Many women know that the pill can cause blood clots, stroke, heart attack, weight gain, and decreased libido. Less well-known is that it is classified as a group one carcinogen for breast, liver, and cervical cancers, which is the same classification as cigarettes and asbestos. This risk is highest for women who have not yet had a full-term pregnancy. While it is true that the pill decreases risk of ovarian and endometrial cancers, these are rather rare types which most women have little risk of, while breast cancer is the most common cancer death among women of childbearing age. I hope your doctor has told you of these side effects if you are on the pill.

Here is something that you probably were not informed of: the pill ages the cervix about two years for every one year of use. This is one reason why pill use can lead to infertility later on (and why the contraceptive industry fuels the multi-billion dollar infertility industry). The cervix produces different types of cervical fluid, and each type has a different function. When a woman is in the infertile part of her cycle, her body produces a type of cervical fluid that blocks sperm from entering her cervix and uterus. During the 100 hours of her cycle when a woman is capable of becoming pregnant, her cervix produces types of fluid that protect, nourish, and guide sperm to her possibly waiting egg, as well as filtering out defective sperm. One function of the pill is that it changes her cervix so that it increases the amount of crypts that make the fluid that blocks sperm and decreases the amount of crypts that aid conception. This process happens naturally with age, but it happens twice as fast for pill-users.

The pill also changes her chemistry and cellular function as to make a woman more susceptible to getting HIV/AIDS and other STDs. Pill-use increases susceptibility to HIV/AIDS, increases the rate of replication of the HIV virus, and speeds the debilitating effects of the disease. Pill and Depo-Provera use is a likely reason why more women have HIV than men.

The pill causes so many hormonal and physical changes in a woman's body that it seems there are always new discoveries about yet another way the pill affects a woman's body. Several studies have shown that the pill also affects the Major Histo-Compatibility (MHC) complex, which plays a role in immune function. Non pill-users are more attracted to a mate that has different MHC genes than her own. Though research is ongoing, it is suspected that this aids the immune function of their offspring, as the children would have a more complete MHC profile. Pill-users, however, are more attracted to MHC-similar mates, which leads some to suspect pill-use as contributing to the growing rate of children now dealing with various immune disorders.

IUD

In a healthy woman, the uterus is sterile. When an IUD is inserted, her body recognizes this as a foreign object and tries to expel it. Her uterus will contract, become inflamed, and shed its inner lining in an effort to remove the IUD, sometimes for months. Excessive bleeding can lead to anemia. For IUDs that contain hormones, these will reduce bleeding and cramping, but it has synthetic hormones and carries the same risks as the pill.

IUD makers warn that users are at greater risk of developing Pelvic Inflammatory Disease, which can lead to infertility, hysterectomy, and even death. IUD users are at greater risk of developing pelvic infections. IUD users are at greater risk of getting yeast infections and Bacterial Vaginosis (BV), which is a change in the normal bacteria in the vagina. With BV there is more pathogenic bacteria than healthy bacteria. A BV infection can increase a woman's risk of contracting HIV/AIDS and other sexually transmitted infections. Other risks of IUD use include perforation of the uterus, uterine embedment of the IUD, infertility, and ectopic pregnancy. When an IUD fails, the pregnancy is extremely high risk to both baby and mother. Although I was unable to find scholarly articles on this, a suspicious number of women on various forums and other sites seem to have experienced their first seizure after IUD-insertion.

Depo Provera

Depo Provera is an injection of the synthetic hormone progestin. One function of the shot is that it alters a woman's cervical fluid. This ages the cervix and can lead to permanent infertility. (Please see "the pill" section for a more comprehensive explanation.) Women who use the shot are twice as likely to contract HIV/AIDS, have increased rate of HIV replication, and have an increased chance of transmitting the virus to others. A 2004 study concluded that the shot interferes with a woman's immune system and puts her at greater risk of contracting gonorrhea and chlamydia. Additional risks of the Depo shot include a double risk of breast cancer among recent users and bone density loss.

Barrier Methods

As I was working on this post, 1flesh.org wrote about the risks of condoms, so as they've done a lot of my research for me in this area, I'll sum up their points, and if you want more details you can head over here. What many people don't know is that semen is very healthy for women's health. Semen acts as an anti-depressant and women who use condoms have higher depression rates than women who do not. To quote a 2002 study on the subject, "Not only were females who were having sex without condoms less depressed, but depressive symptoms and suicide attempts among females who used condoms were proportional to the consistency of condom use." Other studies have suggested that semen can regulate a woman's menstrual cycle, prevent preeclampsia in pregnancy, and reduce breast cancer risk.

Spermicides irritate vaginal walls which makes women more susceptible to HIV/AIDS and other sexually transmitted infections.

Female Sterilization

Tubal ligation is a surgical procedure. As such it carries all the risks of an invasive surgery such as risk of infection, pain, blood clots, and death. Other risks include ectopic pregnancy and for younger patients, higher risk of hysterectomy later. Many women regret having the procedure and may become depressed. Women who have used the birth control pill prior to surgery may experience symptoms of Post Tubal Ligation Syndrome.

Male Sterilization

In normal male function, sperm are produced in the testes, stored in the epididymis above the testes, and during ejaculation are expelled directly out of the body. Sperm and semen never interact with any other part of a man's body and do not enter the bloodstream. Normal men produce approximately 200 million sperm per day.

Risks of sterilization include pain and swelling at the site. Some may acquire an infection. Some men will experience chronic pain and tenderness or may need to have a surgical removal of a sperm granuloma (a mass of sperm and immune cells).

A vasectomy does not inhibit sperm production. Instead of traveling through a tube to the outside of the body, after a vasectomy the millions of sperm spill into the male's body cavity and are recognized as foreign cells and are attacked by his immune system. After 6-9 months after a vasectomy, 90% of men had antisperm antibodies in their blood though the effects of these antigens has not been well studied. Some believe this may contribute to autoimmune disorders. Perhaps due to these antigens, it appears vasectomy is a risk factor for developing Primary Progressive Aphasia (PPA) later on. PPA is a form of dementia which impairs a person's ability to form words in speech, and as it progresses, it can lead to other symptoms of dementia like strange behavior, lack of judgement, and personality changes. In men who have developed PPA, those who had a vasectomy had an earlier age of onset of the disorder than men who have not had a vasectomy. Depression and regretted sterilization is also a risk.

What?s a Woman To Do?

The belief that we have no choice but to bear with the side effects and expense of artificial methods of birth control if we do not wish to have a child at the moment is false. Natural Family Planning is a method in which women learn to observe the changes in their bodies so they know when they are fertile. In India, one study included over 16,000 poor Hindu, Muslim, and Christian women using NFP. They had an effectiveness rate of over 99%. Likewise, in China the effectiveness rates of NFP have remained at about 99%. Furthermore, couples who try NFP tend to like it and continue using it. NFP has a higher continuation rate than all reversible methods of birth control.

Though Natural Family Planning is often mistaken for the old rhythm method, modern methods are based on science. One thing that many people do not know is that a woman is fertile about 100 hours a cycle. During the time when a woman is capable of conceiving, her body secretes a particular type of cervical fluid. This fluid is produced as a result of hormonal changes that stimulate egg maturation in preparation for ovulation. In fact, Drs. Billings, Brown, and Burger studied how women's observations of their fluid correlated with their hormonal changes, and in 1972 published their findings that women can know through simple observation where they are in their fertility cycle just as accurately as doctors and medical personnel in laboratories with fancy lab equipment.

It might be misleading, however, to say that there are no side-effects of using NFP. There are some: NFP couples report increased respect for self and spouse; they almost never divorce; they report an increase in communication with each other and an increase in the quantity and quality of intercourse. For me, I think women deserve to have these side effects.

(AP) ? In a world where Amazon can track your next book purchase and you must show id to buy some allergy medicine, James Holmes spent months stockpiling thousands of bullets and head-to-toe ballistic gear without raising any red flags with authorities.

The suspect in the mass theater shooting availed himself of an unregulated online marketplace that allows consumers to acquire some of the tools of modern warfare as if they were pieces of a new wardrobe. The Internet is awash in sites ranging from BulkAmmo.com, which this weekend listed a sale on a thousand rifle rounds for $335, to eBay, where bidding on one armored special forces helmet has risen to $799.

"We're different than other cultures," said Dudley Brown, executive director of Rocky Mountain Gun Owners, which advocates for firearms owners' rights. "We do allow Americans to possess the accoutrements that our military generally has."

Gun rights activists like Brown celebrate that freedom, but even some involved in the trade are troubled by how easily Holmes stocked up for his alleged rampage.

Chad Weinman runs TacticalGear.com, which caters to police officers looking to augment their equipment, members of the military who don't want to wait on permission from the bureaucracy for new combat gear, and hobbyists like survivalists and paintballers. The site receives "thousands" of orders daily, sometimes from entire platoons that are about to deploy to war zones.

On July 2, Holmes placed a $306 order with the site for a combat vest, magazine holders and a knife, paying extra for expedited two-day shipping to his Aurora apartment. The order, Weinman said, didn't stand out.

"There's a whole range of consumers who have an appetite for these products, and 99.9 percent of them are law-abiding citizens," Weinman said. But he said that "it makes me sick" that Holmes bought material from him. He added that he doesn't sell guns or ammunition and that he was "shocked" at the amount of bullets that Holmes allegedly bought online.

Authorities say all of Holmes' purchases were legal -- and there is no official system to track whether people are stockpiling vast amounts of firepower.

There is no restriction on the sale of bullets in the United States, except for armor-piercing rounds, which can only be bought by law enforcement, said Ginger Colbrun, a spokeswoman for the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms. Hence the proliferation of websites offering Amazon.com-style wish-lists for hollow-point rifle rounds or tracer bullets.

There is a federal law that bars selling body armor to violent felons -- which Holmes was not -- but it is rarely used because there are is no requirement to check whether purchasers of the material have criminal records, according to Dan Gross, president of the Brady Campaign Against Gun Violence.

Over four months, authorities said, Holmes received more than 50 packages at his Aurora apartment and the University of Colorado medical school, where he was studying neuroscience. As the boxes piled up, he began to shop for guns at sporting goods stores -- because of the need to pass a background check to buy a firearm, they are still generally bought at brick-and-mortar locations.

On May 22, law enforcement officials said Holmes bought a Glock pistol. Less than a week later, he upgraded to a shotgun. The following week he bought an AR-15 rifle, versions of which had been outlawed under the assault weapon ban in 1994. But that prohibition expired in 2004 and Congress, in a nod to the political clout of gun enthusiasts, did not renew it.

Holmes also acquired explosive materials and equipment to rig his entire apartment with a complex series of booby traps that took authorities days to dismantle. Officials have not said how he obtained the material for the devices.

Holmes capped off his gun purchases with another pistol on July 7. Authorities say that, 12 days later, Holmes bought a ticket to the midnight premiere of the Batman movie "The Dark Knight Rises" and entered the theater with the crowd, then slipped out the side door and returned dressed for battle.

Oates said the shooter wore a ballistic helmet, gas mask, throat-protector, tactical vest and pants -- such complete protective gear that responding officers almost mistook him for a member of the SWAT team. He lobbed gas canisters at the crowd, then opened fire. By the time police arrived, 90 seconds later, Holmes had shot dozens of people because his rifle was modified with a high-powered drum magazine that allowed him to fire immense amounts of bullets without reloading. "It was a pretty rapid pace of fire in that theater," Oates said.

The high-capacity magazine had also been prohibited under the assault weapon ban, and even though the federal law expired a few states outlaw the devices. Colorado, which has relatively permissive gun laws, does not.

Colorado State Senator John Morse, a Democrat, said he wished the state barred large-capacity magazines and guns like the AR-15, but he does not expect the attack to make that likely. "The NRA has managed to convince the country that this has to happen to protect our Second Amendment rights," Morse said. "As long as we let people buy these guns, we will bury our children."

Rep Carolyn McCarthy (D-NY), whose husband was killed in a mass shooting on the Long Island Railroad in 1993, has proposed a ban on high-capacity magazines in Congress but acknowledges it has little chance of passage. She said she was horrified by the shooting but most shocked by the other material that Holmes allegedly accumulated -- the bullets and combat gear.

"It befuddles me to think those things should be sold to the general public," she said.

Colorado State Rep. Mark Waller cautioned against trying to limit purchases of ammunition. He noted that Holmes reportedly bought 300 rounds for his shotgun. "My 13-year-old son and I go out to the shooting range all the time," said Waller, a Republican. "I buy more than 300 rounds of shotgun shells when I do that."

He said there may be discussion of limiting the sale of the sort of protective clothing that Holmes allegedly donned. "Is that what the right to bear arms means, that you can purchase tactical gear to stop law enforcement from preventing you from perpetrating a crime?" Waller asked. "In the days and weeks to come, this is going to be a significant conversation."

But gun enthusiasts caution against over-reacting to the massacre. Brown, of Rocky Mountain Gun Owners, said he thinks citizen's access to weaponry has made the United States "a stronger country." And he doesn't see anything unusual about many of Holmes' alleged purchases.

"If I only had 6,000 rounds for my AR-15s, I'd literally feel naked," Brown said. Then he totaled up Holmes' firearms purchases: "Two handguns, a shotgun and a rifle. That's the average male in Colorado."

100% The Invisible War

All Critics (41) | Top Critics (14) | Fresh (41) | Rotten (0)

"The Invisible War" makes all too clear that the military isn't very good at justice.

One hearing noted that the victim was dressed provocatively. In her official uniform.

For sheer infuriation value, you can't do much better than Kirby Dick's quietly scathing documentary on rape in the US military.

Dick, whose films include a revealing expose about the movie industry's film ratings board, has created yet another galvanizing call to action with "The Invisible War."

What happened to these women after the rape often shocks and disturbs them as much as the physical act itself.

It is far too difficult to watch. Which means we must.

Kirby Dick has again shown great restraint in presenting such inflammatory material, betting a clear-eyed approach will have an inflammatory effect on his audience -- and it does.

Basically, the message from the military to potential rape victims is: if you get raped, it's your own fault...

One of those documentaries that you watch both fascinated and repulsed - and one of those films that you sense just might be instrumental in helping to change an utterly unacceptable status quo.

...totally serious but, still, incredibly informative and quite shocking with his plethora of data.

In the end there is something to cheer about - vindication for some victims, and proof that a film can make a difference.

We learn that a military court has determined that rape is 'an occupational hazard' of serving in the military.

If this enrages you, it should.

If it doesn't make you angry, you're not human.

Agonizing, infuriating - and effective.

The film is persuasive and infuriating without leaving much hope for change.

[P]owerful rage against system carried by victims who detail sexism, harassment, stalking, rape, reprisals, and rebuffed complaints [whose] attackers haven't been punished.

Convincing look at how the military ignores rape and sexual assault within its ranks.

Powerful, provocative and deeply moving. One of the most vital and enraging documentaries of the year.

Tips That Will Help You Get Fit | AACE IPI

If you want to be in better health you should go ahead and do it! It?s not something that you will do ?eventually.? Being fit and healthy does not mean disrupting your whole routine and way of life. This article will point you in the right direction on your quest for fitness.

Exercise on a regular basis. Although it is best to workout daily, be sure to hit the gym at least twice a week. These sessions need not take up much time. Exercising for 15 to 30 minutes will help. One hour should be your max. Rather than the quantity of your sessions, it is quality and regularity that really matters most.

Make your count in reverse. You should not go upwards, go backwards when counting. This causes your workouts to feel shorter because you are thinking in smaller amounts. It is also more motivating when you tell yourself there are only a few more left to do.

If bench presses are a big exercise for you, to make them even better, try squeezing the bar inward during the exercise. This increases the effectiveness of your workout because it lets you workout the chest more. Squeezing the bar outwards is preferred if you want to work your triceps.

Get your heart healthy. If you are obese or overweight, exercise can strain your heart. Exercise and fitness will improve the health of your heart and keep your weight in check. Also, you will need to watch what you eat and drink during the day. Avoiding saturated fats, eating fiber rich foods, and an increase in vegetables eaten can reduce the amount of calories you intake each day.

Do you not have a large amount of time you can devote to working out? Separate workouts into 2 sessions. You don?t have to work out more, just break the time in half. If you?re trying to jog an hour a day, try doing a half hour right when you get up and another 30 minutes at the end of the day. If you?re not interested in two trips to the gym, get one in somewhere else you find more preferable.

As you work toward meeting your fitness objectives, it makes sense to pay a personal trainer in advance of your sessions. That way, you are going to be likely to go to all your sessions, much more so than if you wait to pay after every workout. If your money is already spent, then it is more likely you will follow through with the training sessions. You should want to get what you paid for. This can be a motivating factor for you.

Comfortable Clothes

Always work out in comfortable clothes. If you work out at a fitness center, there can be some pressure to dress in the latest workout attire, but resist it. Wear clothing that allows you to move freely without making you feel embarrassed. Wearing comfortable clothes keeps your mind focused on fitness.

Try flexing your glutes when you raise weights above your body. That helps give your butt mucles a great workout, but you are also able to protect yourself from injury because you are going to position yourself more efficiently. This position will allow you to be more stable because it stabilizes the spine.

Weight belts were once considered a must have when lifting weights, but people now realize that it?s probably best to save them for the more challenging weights. There are drawbacks to using a weight belt routinely. Your muscles in your back and abs become weaker and more prone to injury.

To get the most from bicep curls, your wrist should be bent backward throughout the exercise. Your biceps must work themselves harder than if your wrist curls inward. Therefore, your biceps will grow even faster.

Do ab exercises other than crunches. A study at a prominent university revealed that even 250,000 crunches only burns enough calories to lose just one pound. Relying only on crunches means that you are not working as hard as you should be. Work at developing your abdominal muscles in other types of exercise as well.

Smaller Muscles

If you want to use weights, start out on the smallest machines. Your smaller muscles will get tired before your larger ones, and it also makes a lot of sense to use small dumbbells before using big ones. In this way, your smaller muscles can get a break while you are working out your larger muscles.

If you?re finding excuses not to exercise, you need to set a specific time each day. You can make excuses all you want, but you should avoid making them unless it?s extremely important. More than likely, the excuse was false.

Is there a game you would like to improve on? No matter what you are playing, always keep your eyes focused on the ball. By training your eye to focus on the ball, you can adapt your eyes to help you play better when actually in the game. Build your coordination by slowly catching things farther and farther away from you.

Varying the exercises you participate in maximizes the benefits for your body. A person who usually uses a treadmill for exercise purposes can go for a run through the neighborhood. Running outdoors feels differently from working out on equipment, and will effect your body in different ways. If you vary your workout you will not get used to a specific workout that only uses one muscle set.

Are you not able to attend a gym? If so, do not worry. You can workout anywhere with the right pair of exercise shoes. There are many ways to work out at a park, for example. You could jog, use a post to do pushups and you could use a bench to do step-ups. You can even pack some resistance bands or some weights to add a bit more to your routine.
