Warming ocean could start big shift of Antarctic ice

ScienceDaily (Sep. 19, 2012) ? Fast-flowing and narrow glaciers have the potential to trigger massive changes in the Antarctic ice sheet and contribute to rapid ice-sheet decay and sea-level rise, a new study has found.

Research results published in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences reveal in more detail than ever before how warming waters in the Southern Ocean are connected intimately with the movement of massive ice-sheets deep in the Antarctic interior.

"It has long been known that narrow glaciers on the edge of the Antarctica act as discrete arteries termed ice streams, draining the interior of the ice sheet," says Dr Chris Fogwill, an author of the study and an ARC Future Fellow with the UNSW Climate Change Research Centre.

"However, our results have confirmed recent observations suggesting that ocean warming can trigger increased flow of ice through these narrow corridors. This can cause inland sectors of the ice-sheet -- some larger than the state of Victoria -- to become thinner and flow faster."

The researchers, led by Dr Nicholas Golledge from Victoria University of Wellington, New Zealand, tested high-resolution model simulations against reconstructions of the Antarctic ice sheet from 20,000 years ago, during the last glacial maximum.

They used a new model, capable of resolving responses to ice-streams and other fine- scale dynamic features that interact over the entire ice sheet. This had not previously been possible with existing models. They then used this data to analyze the effects of a warming ocean over time.

The results showed that while glacier acceleration triggered by ocean warming is relatively localized, the extent of the resultant ice-sheet thinning is far more widespread. This observation is particularly important in light of recently observed dynamic changes at the margins of Antarctica. It also highlighted areas that are more susceptible than others to changes in ocean temperatures.

The glaciers that responded most rapidly to warming oceans were found in the Weddell Sea, the Admundsen Sea, the central Ross Sea and in the Amery Trough.

The finding is important because of the enormous scale and potential impact the Antarctic ice sheets could have on sea-level rise if they shift rapidly, says Fogwill. "To get a sense of the scale, the Antarctic ice sheet is 3km deep -- three times the height of the Blue Mountains in many areas -- and it extends across an area that is equivalent to the distance between Perth and Sydney.

"Despite its potential impact, Antarctica's effect on future sea level was not fully included in the last IPCC report because there was insufficient information about the behavior of the ice sheet. This research changes that. This new, high-resolution modelling approach will be critical to improving future predictions of Antarctica's contribution to sea level over the coming century and beyond."

Richest 400 Americans' net worth hits $1.7 trillion: Forbes

NEW YORK (Reuters) - The net worth of the richest Americans grew by 13 percent in the past year to $1.7 trillion, Forbes magazine said on Wednesday, and a familiar cast of characters once again populated the top of the magazine's annual list of the U.S. uber-elite, including Bill Gates, Warren Buffett, Larry Ellison and the Koch brothers.

The average net worth of the 400 wealthiest Americans rose to a record $4.2 billion, the magazine said.

Collectively, this group's net worth is the equivalent of one-eighth of the entire U.S. economy, which stood at $13.56 trillion in real terms according to the latest government data. But the 13 percent growth in the wealth of the richest Americans far outpaced that of the economy overall, helping widen the chasm between rich and poor.

Bill Gates, the chairman of Microsoft Corp, topped the list for the 19th year in a row with $66 billion, up $7 billion from a year earlier.

Warren Buffett, chairman and chief executive of insurance conglomerate Berkshire Hathaway Inc, stood second with $46 billion, followed by Larry Ellison, head of software maker Oracle Corp, with $41 billion; and the Koch brothers, Charles and David, who run the energy and chemicals conglomerate that bears their name, Koch Industries, were tied for fourth with $31 billion, Forbes said.

The ranks of the top five were unchanged from a year earlier.

Two notable names dropped from the top 10, however. Casino magnate Sheldon Adelson, also active in conservative political causes, fell to the 12 spot from No. 8 last year, and financier George Soros dropped five spots to No. 12 from the No. 7 position one year ago.

The disappointing stock market debut of Facebook Inc also took a toll on the fortune of its founder and CEO, Mark Zuckerberg. His net worth fell by nearly half to $9.4 billion, and he slid to the No. 36 slot from No. 14 a year ago, Forbes said.

(AP) ? Peyton Manning knew there would be some stumbles along the way.

There had to be after four neck surgeries, a year away from the field, and the transition to a new team.

But even at his most pessimistic, Manning surely never envisioned a quarter like this.

One pick. Then another. Then a third.

All before he made it through the opening period Monday night.

Manning's three interceptions in the first 8 minutes helped the Atlanta Falcons build a big lead, and they held off the Denver Broncos for a 27-21 victory.

"Just a really tough start," Manning said. "I won't make any excuses for it. We made poor decisions. We have to eliminate those mistakes."

Matt Ryan threw the 100th touchdown pass of his career, Roddy White had 102 yards receiving and the Falcons (2-0) made an early 20-0 lead stand up, if just barely. Denver (1-1) rallied for a couple of touchdowns in the fourth quarter and were a defensive stop away from getting one last chance to pull it out.

Still, the feel-good optimism from Week 1, when Manning deftly guided the Broncos to an impressive win over the Pittsburgh Steelers in his Mile High debut, was largely erased at the Georgia Dome.

The Falcons, of course, had a grand ol' time against Manning.

"I watched him growing up, and it was good to go out and play against him," said Falcons safety William Moore, who had the first of the picks against Manning, setting up a quick touchdown. "I hope he remembers No. 25."

Maybe in his nightmares.

Thomas DeCoud and Robert McClain also had interceptions as new defensive coordinator Mike Nolan kept mixing up his formations and moving players around the field, confusing Manning enough to put the Falcons in position to pick off passes that seemed a bit wobbly and lacking the zip he had during his glory days in Indianapolis.

"Each turnover has its own story that no one really wants to hear," Manning said. "I've just got to take care of the ball better."

He finished 24 of 37 for 241 yards, including a 17-yard touchdown pass to Demaryius Thomas just before halftime. Willis McGahee rushed for 113 yards and scored on a pair of 2-yard runs in the final 12 minutes.

Ryan was much more efficient than the four-time MVP, completing 24 of 36 for 219 yards. He hooked up with Tony Gonzalez for a 1-yard touchdown pass in the second quarter, then went to White on a 4-yard score in the third period.

Michael Turner scored Atlanta's first TD on a 1-yard run, the play set up by the first of Manning's picks. Matt Bryant kicked two field goals for the Falcons.

Atlanta appeared to be solidly in control heading to the fourth quarter, up 27-7 after Ryan hooked up with White on consecutive passes of 21 and 20 yards, then went to him again for the touchdown.

The Broncos at least made a game of it. Manning completed 7 of 11 for 89 yards in the final period, but two sacks helped stifle the comeback.

"I thought we could find a little momentum there, find some rhythm, which we did," he said. "We had a chance to win that game. I think we will learn from it and we'll be better for it."

The only other time Manning was picked off three times in the opening quarter was with the Colts in a 2007 game at San Diego. The Broncos, in fact, had turnovers on four on their first five possessions.

On the third play from scrimmage, Manning threw into triple coverage looking to connect with Jacob Tamme. Instead, Moore stepped in front of the tight end for the interception and ran down the sideline 33 yards before he was tackled at the 1. Turner took it in from there.

The Broncos ran two plays before Manning faked a play-action handoff and threw down the right seam to Eric Decker. This time, DeCoud picked him off and brought it back 15 yards. After Julio Jones dropped what would have been a touchdown pass from Ryan in the left corner of the end zone, Bryant followed with a 37-yard field goal to make it 10-0.

Manning's third pick went to Robert McClain, a reserve cornerback who was taking his first snap because Asante Samuel injured his neck on the previous play.

On Sunday, Manning's younger brother, Eli, threw three interceptions in the first half. But he rallied the New York Giants to a 41-34 victory over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

No such luck for big brother.

On the next-to-last snap of the first quarter, Atlanta linebacker Stephen Nicholas forced a fumble by Knowshon Moreno near the Denver sideline and Sean Weatherspoon recovered for Atlanta. The Falcons ran 10 plays before Bryant kicked a 42-yard field goal for a 13-0 lead.

Then, it was Ryan finding Gonzalez all alone in the back of the end zone. The tight end who has caught the second-most passes in NFL history was freed up by his quarterback's nifty play fake that made it 20-0, punctuated by Gonzalez's dunk over the goal posts.

The Broncos finally got on the board with 6 seconds left in the half, though it took the replacement officials a second look to get it right. They initially ruled Thomas had been pushed out of bounds without getting both feet down. The replay clearly showed otherwise. Broncos coach John Fox challenged the call and it was reversed.

Another time, the replacements had to huddle just to make sure they knew where to place the ball after a defensive holding penalty on Denver's Champ Bailey, drawing boos from the crowd as the game dragged on for nearly 3? hours.

The Falcons snapped a six-game losing streak on Mondays, including 0-3 under coach Mike Smith. Their last Monday win came over New Orleans on Dec. 12, 2005.

"It was a big game," White said. "We wanted to come out here and win one of these games and prove to everybody that we're a good football team."

NOTES: Manning's career record in Monday night games dropped to 11-4. ... Atlanta had another tough game running the ball. Turner totaled only 42 yards on 17 carries ? and 15 of those came on his final run. ... Samuel was able to get back on the field, but CB Chris Owens went out with a head injury and didn't return. That further depleted the depth in the secondary, which lost Brent Grimes to a season-ending injury in Week 1. ... Thomas, who played at nearby Georgia Tech, finished with eight catches for 78 yards.

China sends patrol ships to islands held by Japan

BEIJING (AP) ? A territorial flare-up between China and Japan intensified Tuesday as two Beijing-sent patrol ships arrived near disputed East China Sea islands in a show of anger over Tokyo's purchase of the largely barren outcroppings from their private owners.

The China Marine Surveillance has drawn up a plan to safeguard China's sovereignty of the islands and the ships were sent to assert those claims, said the Chinese government's official news agency, Xinhua. The marine agency is a paramilitary force whose ships are often lightly armed.

The rocky islands, known as Senkaku to Japanese and Diaoyu to Chinese, have been the focus of recurring spats between the countries and also are claimed by Taiwan. The China-Japan dispute has been heating up in recent months, in part because the nationalist governor of Tokyo proposed buying the islands and developing them.

Japan's central government announced its own deal this week with the Japanese family it recognizes as the owner. Chief Cabinet Secretary Osamu Fujimura told reporters the government budgeted 2.05 billion yen ($26 million) for the purchase "to maintain the Senkakus peacefully and stably."

Public broadcaster NHK said the government and the family signed a deal Tuesday.

The central government does not plan to develop the islands. Several experts interpreted the move as an attempt to block the plan by Tokyo Gov. Shintaro Ishihara, which could have raised tensions further. Ishihara also had said he hoped to visit the islands in October.

"Ishihara put the national government in a very difficult spot. He pushed them into doing this now," said Sheila Smith, a senior fellow at the Council on Foreign Relations in Washington. But she said this was a "good outcome" that should be seen as an attempt by Tokyo to sideline Ishihara.

Japan cannot afford to let the dispute hinder its vital ties with China, its top trading partner, she said.

Smith said Tokyo needs to be able to work through "different problems with Beijing in order to make sure the economic interdependence between those two countries continues to serve both nations' needs."

Beijing, however, responded with fury.

"The determination and the will of the Chinese government and military to safeguard their territorial integrity are firm," Chinese Defense Ministry spokesman Geng Yansheng said in a statement. "We are closely monitoring the development of the situation and reserve the right to take necessary measures."

Japan has claimed the islands since 1895. The U.S. took jurisdiction after World War II and turned them over to Japan in 1972. But Beijing sees the purchase as an affront to its claims and its past calls for negotiations.

Carlyle Thayer, an expert on regional security at the University of New South Wales in Australia, said the sending of the Chinese patrol boats "ups the stakes."

"It's a tit-for-tat response because China is extremely sensitive about sovereignty matters," he said.

Japan's coast guard said it has not taken any special measures in response to the Chinese patrol boats although it continues to monitor the situation.

Thayer said the Chinese boats would likely stop short of entering the 12 nautical miles around the islands that are considered territorial waters and administered by Japan.

"Japan has a pretty robust navy, a very strong and active professional coast guard. What is possible are the kinds of confrontations like occurred at Scarborough Shoal," a disputed reef where Chinese and Philippine boats faced off earlier this year.

"It's all posturing. It's a game of who blinks first," Thayer said.

Beijing's anger has been accompanied by heated reporting in China's state media. Reactions to Japanese actions are sometimes overstated in China, and a commentator in the People's Liberation Army Daily, the main newspaper of China's military, called Japan's move "the most blatant challenge to China's sovereignty since the end of World War II." China on Tuesday also started broadcasting a daily marine weather report for the islands.

About a dozen protesters gathered outside the Japanese Embassy in Beijing chanting, "Japan, get out of China." A car drove slowly toward the embassy's well-guarded gate but did not make a serious attempt to ram it and was stopped by uniformed and plainclothes police.

Xinhua reported that people had also taken to the streets to protest in two cities in the south and east. A number of people waved placards and the Chinese flag and shouted "Defend the Diaoyu Islands" outside the Japanese Consulate General in southern Guangzhou, Xinhua said. About 200 people marched in Weihai in Shandong province, singing the national anthem, it said.

Taiwan's Foreign Ministry also lodged a strong protest to Japan. It called the island purchase an "extremely unfriendly move" that "not only harms the longtime cooperation between Taiwan and Japan but will also aggravate regional tensions in East Asia."

Top Japanese government officials maintain that the flare-up hasn't affected official ties with China, although Deputy Prime Minister Katsuya Okada acknowledged that emotions on both sides were being fanned by activists.

Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda met only briefly with Chinese President Hu Jintao on the sidelines of this past weekend's Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation summit in Vladivostok, Russia, and Japanese news reports said Noda emphasized the importance of dealing with the island dispute from a broad perspective.

China also has announced coordinates marking out the waters off the Diaoyu Islands that it considers its territory, apparently for the first time after doing so earlier for the mainland and other islands.

The coordinates are another step, along with recent announcements of China's intention to use law enforcement vessels, to defend its sovereignty claim, said Stephanie Kleine-Ahlbrandt, northeast Asia project director for the International Crisis Group.

"It's primarily about being seen as taking action to pave the way for further actions to assert China's sovereignty," she said.

In Tokyo, Gov. Ishihara renewed his calls for the islands to be developed for future use by fishermen.

"It appears that the matter is decided," he told reporters. "They say they won't do anything, but China's leaders are still criticizing the plan."

Ishihara said he was freezing the 1.4 billion yen ($18 million) donated toward his purchase plan for the islands and would only release the funds to the government once it was clear whether a port or other facilities would be built.

He also suggested that Japan cooperate with the Philippines and Vietnam, which also have disputes with China in the South China Sea.

"We shouldn't see this as an issue that only concerns Japan," he said.

Heavy drinking may lead to stroke earlier in life

ScienceDaily (Sep. 10, 2012) ? A new study shows that people who have three or more alcoholic drinks per day may be at higher risk for experiencing a stroke almost a decade and a half earlier in life than those who do not drink heavily. The research is published in the September 11, 2012, print issue of Neurology?, the medical journal of the American Academy of Neurology.

"Heavy drinking has been consistently identified as a risk factor for this type of stroke, which is caused by bleeding in the brain rather than a blood clot," said study author Charlotte Cordonnier, MD, PhD, with the University of Lille Nord de France in Lille, France. "Our study focuses on the effects of heavy alcohol use on the timeline of stroke and the long-term outcome for those people."

For the study, 540 people with an average age of 71 who had a type of stroke called intracerebral hemorrhage were interviewed about their drinking habits. Doctors also interviewed the participants or the caregivers or relatives about the participants' drinking habits. A total of 137 people, or 25 percent, were heavy drinkers, which was defined as having three or more drinks per day, or about 1.6 ounces per day of "pure" alcohol.

Participants also underwent CT brain scans and their medical records were reviewed.

The study found that heavy drinkers experienced a stroke at an average age of 60, 14 years before the average age of their non-heavy drinking counterparts. Among people younger than 60 who had a stroke that occurred in the deep part of the brain, heavy drinkers were more likely to die within two years of the study follow-up than non-heavy drinkers.

"It's important to keep in mind that drinking large amounts of alcohol contributes to a more severe form of stroke at a younger age in people who had no significant past medical history," said Cordonnier.

The study was supported by the University of Lille Nord de France and the Association for the Development of Research and Innovation the North Pas de Calais (ADRINORD).

Celebrating Our Grandparents | the creative mama

Welcome to The Creative Mama. If you're new here, you may want to subscribe to our RSS feed. Thanks for visiting!

Grandparents? Day was yesterday, and I?ve been thinking a lot about my own grandparents recently. ?About the role they played in my childhood and throughout my adult life, the unique history that they have passed down to me, and for the memories and traditions that I will retell to my own children.

I am extremely blessed, at age 35, to still have all four of my grandparents here with me (plus two irreplaceable ?adopted grandparents?, Popaw Harold and Momaw Jannie, who came to every birthday party we ever had, taught us how to play Rook, slipped chocolate pudding to us before we?d finished our lunch, and shared a place of honor in the grandparents? row at my sisters? weddings).

my grandparents ?| ?circa 1990s and circa 1950s

I can still remember spending the night with my maternal grandparents when I was a little girl? waking up to the smell of coffee, bacon, and Momaw Bertie?s delicious homemade biscuits. ?She had a special way of mixing them, just like her mom taught her. ?She said she made them with ?sweet milk? as opposed to buttermilk, and I always found that term fascinating. ?I didn?t think there was anything sweet about milk! ?Anyhow, I would wander into the kitchen to find my Mom already sitting at the kitchen table, drinking black coffee out of corningware mugs, listening to updates on all of the family members that we didn?t get to see often. ?I remember the yellowed keys on the old upright piano, once burned in a house fire. ?I remember playing on their carport with my cousins. ?I smile when I think about all us kids sitting in a semicircle around the Christmas tree, waiting for our turn. ?When I was a teenager, Popaw Lucian would ask me who my newest boyfriend was? and if his name was Johnny or Billy. ?Popaw gave my kids their first puppy this past year. ?He was always ready with a joke, and he had the warmest, heartiest laugh. ?I have great memories of Popaw playing his fiddle for us ? we would watch with big eyes and smiles ? and he would say, ?now how about that?? when he finished his tune. ?They were always so hard-working, and still are, even now in their 70?s. ?I remember that there was always a home improvement project in process. ?Momaw was just as involved in remodeling as Popaw was? she could hang windows, mount doors and put up drywall just as well as he could. ?They passed their DIY spirit onto my mom, who passed it down to my sisters and me. ?And I still have my own toolbox!

My paternal grandparents are the epitome of grace-based grandparenting. ?They made us feel like it was an honor to simply have us in their lives! ?My two sisters and I would bounce off the walls at their house, and instead of calling us down or complaining about the noise we were making, they would only celebrate our childish energy, and wish to bottle some of it for themselves. ?They taught us that there is always a reason for everything, even if we couldn?t see or understand it at the moment. ?They never said no when we asked to visit them. ?They always had time for us, no matter what was on their schedule. ?They simply made us a part of their plans, and part of their lives. ?When I was born, they carpeted over their beautiful hardwood floors, so that I would have a soft place to crawl. ?Momaw Jiggs never minded us making messes at their house. ??Ahh, we?ll clean it up later,? was always her attitude. ?She taught us girls how to shuck corn, snap beans, and make strawberry jam. ?She was the picture of hospitality, and always made sure we ate something within five minutes of coming through her door. ?Popaw Deb always shared old family photographs ? and their backstories ? with us, and was such a wonderful influence on me in that regard. ?He read us countless Bible stories in his recliner, remembering to explain the parts that we might not understand. ?He always bought our favorite snack cakes at the grocery store. ?In fact, he bought us little miniature grocery carts, took us and the carts to the store, and would make us laugh by pretending to cry out when we bumped our carts into his shins. ?He let us fill our little baskets with whatever treats and goodies we wanted to eat. ?They both went to great lengths to make us know that there were never any favorites between us three girls. ?Even Momaw and Popaw?s marriage was a wonderful example to us. ?They just celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary this week! ?To this day, they laugh ? and pray ? over their troubles, and they both have a knack for finding the humor and silver lining in most any dark cloud. ?Momaw is very sick right now, but Popaw always takes excellent care of her, and has for years. ?Popaw said he doesn?t resent it for a moment. ?Even now, in the hospital, he refuses to leave her side, and continues to make her laugh in her hospital bed. ?I can?t think of a more perfect example of constant, beautiful, faithful love? as theirs.

I hope that you?ll celebrate these wonderful people in your own lives this week, whether honoring them in person or celebrating their memory.

Will you share your memories of your own grandparents with us here in the comments? ?Has their influence shaped the kind of parent you are today, or the parent you hope to become?

APEC vows to fend off euro woes, boost finances

VLADIVOSTOK, Russia (AP) ? Pacific Rim leaders pledged Sunday to fend off the deepening damage from the European crisis and revive flagging growth in the region by supporting open trade, reforming their economies and strengthening public finances.

The 21-member Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation forum wrapped up an annual summit in this far eastern Russian seaport Sunday, vowing to work together to support growth and restore confidence in shaken financial markets. The region accounts for about half of all world economic activity and 40 percent of world trade.

"Our work was constructive. We have specific results and I am satisfied with the outcome of the work," Russian President Vladimir Putin said of the event, which showcased Moscow's ambitions to expand trade and business along its long-neglected Pacific coast.

The leaders issued a statement welcoming European leaders' promises to help stabilize the crisis-stricken euro region and warning against "excess volatility" and distortions in financial markets. The APEC leaders said they would work to reduce deficits and imbalances in their countries' own finances.

"The events in Europe are adversely affecting growth in the region. In such circumstances, we are resolved to work collectively to support growth and foster financial stability, and restore confidence," the statement said.

"We remain committed to reducing imbalances by strengthening deficit economies' public finances with sound and sustainable policies that take into account evolving economic conditions," it said.

Despite signs that robust growth in the dynamic Asia-Pacific is being dragged down by reduced demand for the region's exports, Putin described the attitude among his fellow leaders as one of "constrained optimism."

The APEC region is generally not as heavily encumbered as Europe by soaring social welfare costs, Putin said.

"There is nothing like the burden that exists in Europe," Putin said, though he acknowledged that the region faces many problems.

Given APEC's role as a consensus led forum, the annual summit did not advance any major new policy initiatives. The leaders' statement mostly endorsed earlier calls for freer trade, combatting corruption and allowing exchange rates to fluctuate more freely.

The leaders also called for closer cooperation on food security and avoiding potentially destabilizing surges in food prices.

Food security "is one of the most acute problems of our time," Putin said in convening Sunday's meeting.

Revitalizing growth through more open trade is an urgent priority for the APEC forum, whose aim is to dismantle barriers and bottlenecks that interfere with business, while nurturing closer economic ties.

The leaders also endorsed a plan to cut tariffs on environmental-related goods ? such as waste-water treatment technologies ? to 5 percent or less by 2015.

"By reducing tariffs on environmental goods, we will help our businesses and citizens to access important environmental technologies," the joint statement said.

Among other initiatives the APEC leaders agreed on the need to crack down on poaching and trafficking in endangered species, to improve the reliability of supply chains that can often be disrupted by disasters and other disruptions, to enhance emergency preparedness and nurture innovation.

Russia's hosting of the APEC summit highlights a renewed focus on developing its resource-rich Far East, where it plans to develop modern railroads, seaports and airports to help build a bridge between Asia and Europe.

During the week of APEC-related meetings, Russian companies signed several deals to support development in the region, including a memorandum on a liquefied natural gas plant to increase exports to the Asia-Pacific region and a timber processing plant.

"We are interested to see more foreign investors coming to Russia," Igor Shuvalov, Russian first deputy prime minister responsible for economic issues, told The Associated Press. "The main task of our forum is to facilitate freer trade. This task is being fulfilled."

Next year's APEC summit is due to be held on the Indonesian island of Bali, and the meeting in 2014 in China.

Practical Advice for Raising Early Stage Venture Capital ? HBR ...

September 6, 2012 ? 11:37 AM

Good read on startup?s funding and venture capital ? practical tips and advice.? All entrepreneur?s read recommendation.

Excerpt:? Most great businesspeople I?ve met would correctly advise an entrepreneur to avoid raising money if possible. Easy for them to say, right? But there are good reasons to bootstrap. First, you maintain control of the company. Second, maintaining control allows you to experiment and learn where the business is ?naturally? going. Third, if you own the company, you can have a great exit at a low price. Fourth, if you?re able to build the company without significant outside capital that may mean your business has even more ?real? legs.

But raising venture capital is sometimes a great idea. If your business has high velocity, high margins, and a huge market, venture may be a good road for you. There are some helpful resources out there on venture terms, good venture funds vs. bad ones, and questions you may want to ask a venture capitalist if you meet one.

The notes below are practical working tips on how to go about navigating venture capitalist conversations. Some of these might be surprising or seem hard to follow. But, in my experience, they?re good medicine.

Quest to drill to Antarctic lake to begin

After 16 years of meticulous planning, a team of British scientists is finally ready to journey to a remote, windswept plain in Antarctica, where they will drill deep into the ice to take the first-ever samples from a lake cut off from the sunlit world for up to 1 million years.

Their target, Lake Ellsworth, may house tiny organisms utterly new to science, and may proffer the first solid clues regarding the age of the massive ice sheet that covers it.

The lake is 7 miles long, a mile wide and about 500 feet deep (12 kilometers by 3 km by 150 meters). It lies in the middle of West Antarctica, hidden beneath nearly 2 miles (3 km) of ice, and scientists plan to use a specially built hot water drill to reach its fresh waters.

A team of a dozen researchers and engineers will assemble at a remote field camp in late November, and drilling is slated to begin in December, said Martin Siegert, the lead investigator for the project and a glaciologist at the University of Bristol. [ Stunning Photos of Antarctica's Lake Ellsworth ]

  1. Science news from NBCNews.com

    1. Obama and Romney face off in science quiz

Science editor Alan Boyle's blog: President Barack Obama and his GOP challenger, Mitt Romney, have answered 14 questions on science and technology issues, including the hot issue of climate change.

    2. Distance record set for quantum teleportation
    3. Scientists sink to new low in deep-sea drilling
    4. Huge experiment gears up to catch tiny neutrinos

Drilling deep
The massive undertaking is aimed at one simple goal: to fetch 24 small titanium canisters of lake water ? just 3.3 ounces (100 milliliters) each ? along with sediment from the lake bottom, all scooped up with sterile equipment that will keep both samples and the lake environment utterly pristine.

It will take three straight days of drilling to reach the surface of Lake Ellsworth. Once the lake is breached, Siegert said, the scientists will have about 24 hours to retrieve all the samples before the borehole freezes over again.

However, if the work isn't completed in 24 hours, the team has enough fuel to melt through the ice a second time, which would buy them more time. "Some snags will happen, so you have to build in redundancy," Siegert told OurAmazingPlanet.

The scientists will be able to watch the action live as it unfolds beneath them. The team has affixed tiny, high-definition video cameras to the probe and the sediment corer, along with bright lights to illuminate the darkness. One camera looks up toward the surface, and one looks down.

"We're really looking forward to getting images back," Siegert said.

Is it alive?
Although the canisters of lake water won't be opened until they are returned to clean rooms back in England for analysis, the world won't have to wait to learn what life forms ? if any ? lurk in Lake Ellsworth.

As the water is sucked into the titanium canisters, it will be pushed through a filter ? a mesh so fine that, if any microbes are indeed living in the frigid, pitch-dark lake, some will end up caught on the filter.

"So when the probe comes to the surface, we won't be able to analyze the water, but we will be able to analyze the filter immediately," Siegert said. "We will look at it under a microscope within a few hours. So (to) the question ? 'Is there life in the lake?' ? we will have an answer very quickly."

Yet that is not the only question scientists are seeking to answer. Scientists are hoping that the layers of sediment plucked from the bottom of Lake Ellsworth will offer clues to the true age of the West Antarctic Ice Sheet.

"We don't know. It could be 100,000 to 1 million years old," Siegert said. "We think it's at risk of change, but what we need is to understand how likely that is, and gain an appreciation of when the ice sheet last decayed because of environmental conditions," he said.

If all goes according to plan, scientists could have samples of the ancient lake in hand by Dec. 18.

Race to the bottom
It's likely the British will be the first of three groups currently seeking to sample a long-buried Antarctic lake.

Earlier this year, after more than a decade of drilling, a Russian team in East Antarctica finally breached Lake Vostok, the largest hidden lake on the continent.

The approach of the brutal winter season, along with the nature of the drill equipment, prevented the Russian team from bringing back samples; however, many scientists question the integrity of any water retrieved from Lake Vostok. The Russian team has used kerosene and other materials to keep the borehole open, and there are fears of sample contamination.

In early 2013, an American team is planning to drill to hidden lakes in West Antarctica.

Siegert said his team is finally feeling relaxed after years of furious work, and said he can't speculate what they'll find in Lake Ellsworth.

"Honestly, we just don't know until we do it," he said. "That's one of the wonderful things about this project. We're very excited about doing our work."

Sole Business Owners Need an Estate Plan ...

by David Pastor on September 6, 2012

If you own your own business, what will happen to it and to all your clients if you should pass away tomorrow? No one thinks they are going to die tomorrow, but it happens to people every day and many are not prepared. Without a business plan in place to continue to provide services, or to notify clients and pay outstanding liabilities or cancel recurring orders, a business can quickly sink into financial trouble; which can end up causing family or loved ones time and money.

An estate plan can help provide guidelines for someone to either take over a business or to manage the business only long enough to sell it. You need to designate someone you trust to close the business or to run the business. An estate plan can provide a process for notifying clients and for temporarily suspending business operations while details are sorted out.

It is wise to sometimes provide flexibility for the person you designate to choose whether to continue the business or to sell it. You should also provide a plan for the proceeds of the business. Should the proceeds from the sale of the business be divided among the beneficiaries of your estate or should they be given only to the person who sold the business? Who will pay the taxes on the proceeds?

There are many decisions which can go into a plan to prepare for the continued operation or sale of a business but before you get overwhelmed thinking about all the ?what if?s?, the first step is to meet with an experienced estate planning attorney who can help you determine what you have to decide now and what can wait.

Jury selection opens in former Detroit mayor's corruption trial

DETROIT | Thu Sep 6, 2012 4:10pm EDT

DETROIT (Reuters) - Jury selection began on Thursday in the trial of former Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick, who was elected in 2001 as a bright hope to reverse the city's decades of decline but now faces up to 30 years in prison if convicted of federal corruption charges.

The jury's racial makeup in the trial of Kilpatrick, who is black, is an issue because the pool of 220 potential jurors from southeastern Michigan includes people both from Detroit, which is 83 percent black, and predominantly white nearby areas.

"Our future ... right here, right now," was the slogan that helped Kilpatrick, then a 31-year-old state legislator, become the youngest mayor in Detroit history.

He already has spent more than a year in prison after pleading guilty to charges of perjury and obstruction of justice, and probation violations.

Kilpatrick now faces up to 30 years in prison, accused in a 46-count indictment of using cash from a tax-exempt civic fund to pay for yoga classes, golf clubs and anti-bugging equipment. His father and two other men, a former city contractor and a former Detroit official, also go on trial with Kilpatrick.

Kilpatrick unsuccessfully sought to have the charges dismissed because of concerns that blacks are systematically excluded from federal jury pools in eastern Michigan. Supporters of Kilpatrick have cited the case of Bobby Ferguson, a friend of Kilpatrick whose case was heard by a jury drawn from a pool that was less than 10 percent black.

Prosecutors are expected to say that Kilpatrick used the mayor's office to make money for himself and his associates, including his politically connected father, Bernard Kilpatrick, who is also on trial.

His mother, Carolyn Cheeks Kilpatrick, who was a 14-year U.S. congresswoman, is not charged in the case. Bernard Kilpatrick was once the chief-of-staff to the top elected official in Wayne County, where Detroit is located.

Kilpatrick, a Democrat, failed to turn around Detroit's economy and declining city services, which were hit hard by the 2008 and 2009 recession. Kilpatrick's successor, Mayor Dave Bing, has been forced to cut city jobs and budgets and the city is struggling to avoid declaring bankruptcy.

Despite the revival of the major auto companies headquartered in the Detroit area, the city's shrinking population and declining revenue have left it with a large budget deficit and billions in long-term debt.

Kilpatrick stepped down as mayor in 2008 as part of a plea agreement for lying under oath in a $8.4 million city settlement brought by two fired police officers. The charges to which he pleaded guilty showed that he lied in order to conceal cell phone text messages detailing an affair with a woman who was his chief of staff.

Kilpatrick's record of text messages is expected to be part of the evidence introduced during the new trial, which prosecutors say will demonstrate that he ran a corrupt office.

Judge Nancy Edmunds tentatively has scheduled opening statements in the case for next Monday, depending on how quickly 12 jurors and six alternate jurors can be chosen.

Edmunds previously presided over the trial of the so-called "underwear bomber" Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab, who last October pleaded guilty to trying to blow up a commercial airliner with explosively sewn into his underwear and is serving a life sentence in prison.
